Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most prevalent sexually transmitted infection. Different HPV types are classified as high-risk or low-risk. High-risk types, especially HPV 16 and 18, are the primary causes of cervical cancer and are linked to other anogenital and head and neck cancers. The oncogenic potential is driven by E6 and E7 proteins, which, upon viral DNA integration into the host genome, lead to uncontrolled cell proliferation and genetic instability. During viral DNA integration, part of the HPV genome might be lost, but E6 and E7 genes are typically retained, making targeted screening of these genes essential for accurate detection and avoiding false negatives due to viral integration events.
