Lauryl Sulphate Broth is a selective liquid culture medium used primarily for the detection and enumeration of
coliform bacteria
, especially Escherichia coli, in water, food, and cosmetic products.
This medium is formulated in accordance with international standards such as

ISO 9308-1. It is manufactured by BioLab and exclusively imported and distributed in Iran by Fardad Azma Rad Co.

Key Components and Mechanism of Action:

  • Sodium Lauryl Sulphate:
    A selective agent that inhibits Gram-positive bacteria and many non-coliform Gram-negative organisms, allowing coliforms to grow preferentially.

  • Crystal Violet:
    An additional inhibitory agent that enhances selectivity by suppressing unwanted microbial growth.

  • Lactose:
    The sole carbohydrate source; coliforms ferment lactose, leading to acid and gas production.

  • Gas Detection (Durham Tube):
    The presence of gas bubbles in the inner Durham tube is considered a positive result for coliform activity.
