Lauryl Sulphate Broth – BioLab
Lauryl Sulphate Broth is a selective liquid culture medium used primarily for the detection and enumeration of coliform bacteria, especially Escherichia coli, in water, food, and cosmetic products. This medium is formulated in accordance with international standards such as ISO 9308-1. It is manufactured by BioLab and exclusively imported and distributed in Iran by Fardad Azma Rad Co.
Key Components and Mechanism of Action:
-
Sodium Lauryl Sulphate:
A selective agent that inhibits Gram-positive bacteria and many non-coliform Gram-negative organisms, allowing coliforms to grow preferentially. -
Crystal Violet:
An additional inhibitory agent that enhances selectivity by suppressing unwanted microbial growth. -
Lactose:
The sole carbohydrate source; coliforms ferment lactose, leading to acid and gas production. -
Gas Detection (Durham Tube):
The presence of gas bubbles in the inner Durham tube is considered a positive result for coliform activity.
