TCBS Agar

TCBS Agar is a highly selective and differential medium used for the isolation and identification of Vibrio species,
particularly Vibrio cholerae, from clinical, environmental, and food samples.
Its alkaline pH and selective agents suppress non-target bacteria, enabling accurate detection of pathogenic Vibrio strains.

 Key Components:

  • Sucrose – For differentiation based on fermentation (e.g., V. cholerae)

  • Bile Salts & Sodium Citrate – Inhibit Gram-positive and many Gram-negative bacteria

  • Sodium Thiosulfate & Ferric Citrate – Detect hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) production

  • Agar – Solidifying agent

  • Alkaline pH (≈ 8.6) – Optimal for Vibrio growth
