Caldesmon Antibody (Immunohistochemistry)
The Caldesmon Antibody is a specialized marker used in immunohistochemistry (IHC) to accurately differentiate smooth muscle tumors from myofibroblastic and other soft tissue tumors.
Caldesmon is a regulatory protein found in smooth muscle and other tissues, interacting with actin, myosin, tropomyosin, and calmodulin.
This antibody is highly useful for distinguishing uterine leiomyoma from endometrial stromal tumors, as well as for the identification of epithelioid mesothelioma. It provides pathologists with critical diagnostic information for differentiating smooth muscle neoplasms from non-muscle tumors.
🔬 Features and Benefits
-
High specificity and accuracy: Detects smooth muscle cells precisely in FFPE tissues
-
Clear cytoplasmic staining: Brown color observed in the cytoplasm of positive cells
-
Essential diagnostic tool: Differentiates leiomyoma, leiomyosarcoma, and stromal tumors
-
Compatible with standard IHC protocols: Suitable for all pathology and research laboratories
-
Stable and reliable performance: Consistent results at 2–8 °C storage
⚙️ Principle of the Assay
During the IHC process, the Caldesmon antibody binds to its target antigen in tissue sections. The HRP-labeled secondary antibody then binds to the primary antibody, forming the antigen–antibody–HRP complex. Upon addition of the DAB chromogen, a brown insoluble reaction product forms in the cytoplasm of positive cells, confirming Caldesmon expression under the microscope.
💡 Diagnostic Applications

Differentiation of smooth muscle tumors from myofibroblastic lesions
-
Diagnosis of uterine leiomyoma and leiomyosarcoma
-
