Calcitonin Antibody (Immunohistochemistry)
Exclusive Distributor of Talent Biomedical in Iran
The Calcitonin Antibody is a specialized IHC reagent used to detect thyroid parafollicular C cells
and tumors derived from them. Calcitonin is a 32–amino acid peptide hormone that regulates calcium metabolism.
As a result, it serves as an important marker in thyroid and neuroendocrine pathology.
In addition, C cells of the thyroid produce most of the body’s calcitonin.
However, some neuroendocrine cells in the respiratory and digestive tracts can also synthesize this hormone.
Therefore, detecting calcitonin expression provides valuable diagnostic information.
🔬 Features and Benefits
- Specific identification of thyroid C cells and neuroendocrine lesions
- Clear brown cytoplasmic staining in positive cells
- Highly valuable for diagnosing medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC)
- Excellent stability with an 18–month shelf life at 2–8 °C
- Compatible with standard IHC protocols
⚙️ Principle of the Assay
During the IHC procedure, the primary Calcitonin antibody binds directly to its antigen in the tissue.
Next, an HRP–conjugated secondary antibody attaches to the primary antibody.
Finally, the DAB chromogen reacts with the complex and produces a brown cytoplasmic stain.
Consequently, this stain confirms calcitonin expression.
💡 Diagnostic Applications
- Detection of Medullary Thyroid Carcinoma (MTC)
- Identification of C-cell hyperplasia
- Evaluation of thyroid and extra-thyroid neuroendocrine tumors
- Research involving endocrine regulation and calcium metabolism
