SMA belongs to the actin family of cytoskeletal proteins, forming microfilaments that maintain cell structure and contractility.

In pathology, SMA shows positive cytoplasmic staining in smooth muscle tumors such as leiomyoma and leiomyosarcoma, as well as in myofibroblasts and myoepithelial cells.
This antibody is valuable for distinguishing muscle-derived tumors from other soft tissue neoplasms.
